A patient hunter with one extremely talkative set of extra eyes.

Effective rangeLongbow and shortbow · Shortsword when cornered
The person behind the legend
Who they are
Roland survived the destruction of Ashreach Hill during the Infernal War. His company vanished without bodies or blood, leaving only a cracked warhorn and the name Towerheart. He has spent twenty years following infernal symbols and rumors, convinced the thing responsible escaped. He joined the party in Ashenvale with his Billy Bumbler companion and very quickly discovered that solemn vengeance travels poorly with this group.
Signature methods
How they fight
Marking one quarry and refusing to lose track of it
Using an alarm ward before the party sleeps—because somebody has to
Sending Billy to listen, scout, and occasionally learn more than the adults
Switching from bow to shortsword when the fight collapses inward
Magic & stranger talents
What answers
Hunter’s Mark, an uncanny bond that fixes his attention on a chosen quarry
Protective alarm wards
A working knowledge of infernal signs gathered over two decades of pursuit
Eyes that others repeatedly compare to Towerheart’s—an observation Roland finds considerably less flattering each time
What people remember
The incidents that became stories.
Heroism, poor judgment, private grief, public embarrassment—usually in combinations nobody planned.
01
Joined while the others were preparing a fake bard identity and somehow stayed.
02
Warned the party that one of them might be a spy; the discussion became an argument involving goats and spelling.
03
Accidentally broke the truce with the Shrine’s mimic guardians by firing one extra shot.
04
Tried to outword Towerheart in the Spirit Realm. Towerheart marked Billy instead.
05
Was told by the Shell of Many Dreams that his eyes mirror something that should not exist in this world.
Roland’s personal investigation
The file that never closed.
Known events, collected testimony, and questions Roland has carried since Ashreach. Conclusions remain provisional because demons are famously committed to transparent recordkeeping.

Ashreach Hill
StatusOrigin of the hunt
01
Twenty years ago, Roland served with the Valerian Guard at Ashreach Hill, an outpost near the newly formed Deadlands.
02
A demonic entity known as Towerheart attacked the position. When Roland regained consciousness, his company was gone. There were no bodies and no blood—only silence and a cracked warhorn belonging to his closest friend.
03
Roland has never accepted that an entire company could vanish without leaving a battlefield behind. He has treated the absence itself as evidence ever since.
Caught at the table
From the actual transcript
Things they genuinely said during play. Profanity, questionable plans, and all. Obvious transcription errors have been lightly cleaned; the wording has not been rewritten.
Session 6Defending the basic logic of espionage
“Why would the spy tell you there's a spy in the group if they're trying to spy?”
Session 9Considering a safer home for an argumentative demon skull
“Hey guys, what would happen if we throw him in the bag of holding?”
Session 12Faced with a serious supernatural problem and an equally serious thirst
“Now, do we go drinky drink or do we go find a shaman?”
Session 12The investigation reaches its most disciplined phase
“Who fucking lied?”
From the road
Notes in their own voice
Reconstructed from the surviving campaign record—not verbatim transcripts, but faithful to the person revealed at the table.
A useful briefing
“I told them there may be a spy among us. Within minutes we were discussing trapped goats. I miss soldiers.”
The Spirit Realm
“I admitted I may have left my courage and honor on Ashreach Hill. Billy looked at me as if he already knew. Then Towerheart chose him.”
Rule for shrines
“If the treasure chest becomes friendly, do not shoot it again. This rule now exists because of me.”
People in their orbit
No one adventures alone, despite repeated efforts.
Billy Bumbler
Companion, scout, confidant, and the one friend Roland could not deny when Towerheart demanded a price.
Towerheart
The entity Roland has hunted since Ashreach. Roland privately fears Towerheart may be using the resemblance in their eyes to watch through his.
General Thornvale
A source of warnings, including the still-unresolved claim that the party contains a spy.
Where the record stands
Alive after the red-light cliffhanger. Billy carries Towerheart’s red mark and has been quieter since the Spirit Realm.
